Public involvement

Engaging the farming community in zoonotic disease research

As part of our zoonotic TB research we have a community involvement activity funded by the Health Protection Research Unit in Behavioural Science and Evaluation at University of Bristol. In this activity we are aiming to embed representatives of the farming community in zoonotic disease research.

We want to understand more about zoonotic TB cases in England. Are they linked with certain occupations or due to contact with infected cattle? How many people are at risk of being infected with M. bovis? What measures could be taken to reduce the risk?

Find out about Ross’s experiences as a PPI contributor here.

Current opportunities

We’d love to hear your thoughts on how to involve young farmers in the ZooTB study.

We are looking for young farmers to join our advisory panel. We are asking advisors to take part in a one-hour informal discussion to help shape this research. We’ll reimburse you for your time and help (£25/hour).

The session will be held over Zoom on Thursday 30 March, 6-7pm.

Ongoing opportunities

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for members of the farming community to join our advisory panel to help develop our research. The role is open to those who have regular contact with cattle, or a history of working with cattle. We want to hear farmers views on TB and recruite their involvement for improving communication between farmers, vets, the scientific community and policy makers. The opportunity will allow members to co-develop zoonotic disease research.

What are we asking?

We’re keen to listen to as many voices and have your involvement as we develop this study. You will join the study research team as an expert advisor. We meet approximately monthly for a one-hour informal discussion to help shape the research. Meetings will be held online, and are accessible by phone, so you don’t have to travel anywhere. We will do our best to accommodate any access requirements you may have. Where possible, we may be able to meet in person.

What’s next?

If this project sounds like something you would like to help us with, we’d be keen to hear from you, please register your interest either directly with a member of the research team (zootb-study@bristol.ac.uk) or register an expression of interest here, and we’ll be back in touch.
